Eyewitness News Wins in Primary 2014 Coverage Among Viewers

Most Extensive Coverage On-Air and Online of Campaign 2014

From the opening of the polls to the final ballot, Eyewitness News provided viewers with the most in-depth coverage of Primary Night on all platforms. Eyewitness News had reporters at local political headquarters bringing viewers victory speeches live from major winners, and expert analysis from Joe Fleming, which allowed Eyewitness News to declare winners first in key races.

As a result, Eyewitness News:

  • Had the highest rated Primary Night number (9pm to 10pm), reaching 42,200 viewers 18+
  • Reached 81,000 households with expanded Primary Night coverage

WPRI’s comprehensive coverage was dominant online as well. WPRI.com brought users the fastest and most accurate results of any local media website. Eyewitness News Finishes #1 in 4 Newscasts

#1 at 4:30am, Noon, 5pm, & the #1 late newscast – 10pm on Fox Providence

Eyewitness News on WPRI 12 and Fox Providence had a strong May 2014 ratings period – winning 4 newscasts. Eyewitness News was the only local news station to gain viewers in local news share in the Providence/New Bedford television market.

Highlights include:

  • Eyewitness News at 10pm on Fox Providence was the #1 late news
  • Eyewitness News at Noon was #1 in its time period
  • Eyewitness News at 5pm was #1, tied with WJAR
  • Eyewitness News This Morning was the #1 newscast weekdays at 4:30am, tied with WJAR

This May, Eyewitness News finished first in 4 newscasts. More specifically, Eyewitness News This Morning at 4:30am on WPRI 12 was #1 with Adults 25-54, up 100% year to year. Eyewitness News This Morning at 7am on Fox Providence continued its growth in key demos, up 17% with Adults 25-54. Eyewitness News at Noon was once again #1 with Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49.

Also in May, Eyewitness News Live at 5pm finished in first place, tied with WJAR, in Adults 25-54. Eyewitness News at 6:30pm on Fox Providence grew in Adults 25-54, with 75% growth in the time period year to year and up 14% from February 2014 to May 2014. In the late news race, Eyewitness News at 10 on Fox Providence was #1 with Adults 25-54.

In other key programming, The Rhode Show on WPRI 12 continues on its path of consistent growth. Rhode Island’s only local, lifestyle, news and entertainment program was up 14% in Women 35+ year to year.

WPRI’s growth also extends to its digital multi-screen coverage. According to Adobe Analytics, WPRI.com was up 24% year to year in total page views and up 15% in unique visitors.

WPRI 12 & The Providence Journal to Host First Televised Gubernatorial Debates of Campaign 2014

This year, Rhode Island voters will be electing a new governor. With so much at stake, it’s important for voters to understand where candidates stand on the key issues impacting Rhode Islanders.

On Tuesday, June 10, 2014, Eyewitness News and The Providence Journal will team up to present the first two political debates of the year. The first televised event will be Campaign 2014: The Democratic Gubernatorial Debate. On Tuesday, June 17, 2014, Eyewitness News and The Providence Journal will present Campaign 2014: The Republican Gubernatorial Debate.

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, R.I. General Treasurer Gina Raimondo and former U.S. Education Department Deputy Assistant Secretary Clay Pell will debate on a variety of issues. Eyewitness News will broadcast Campaign 2014: The Democratic Gubernatorial Debate live on WPRI 12 on Tuesday, June 10th at 7pm.

Then on Tuesday, June 17th at 7pm on WPRI 12, Cranston Mayor Allan Fung and Barrington businessman Ken Block will square off in Campaign 2014: The Republican Gubernatorial Debate.

Moderated by Target 12 Investigator Tim White, who will be joined by Providence Journal political columnist Ed Fitzpatrick and WPRI.com reporter Ted Nesi, both debates will be broadcast live from the Providence Performing Arts Center, located at 220 Weybosset St. in Providence.

Eyewitness News Continues Momentum with February 2014 Ratings

Makes impressive gains in early evening newscasts and 11pm news

During the February 2014 ratings period, Eyewitness News on WPRI 12 and Fox Providence continued its trend of growing audience on its broadcast and digital screens in the competitive Providence/New Bedford television market. Highlights of the February 2014 ratings period include:

  • By far, Eyewitness News has the biggest ratings increases in all early evening newscasts in the local DMA
  • Eyewitness News at Noon is #1 in key ratings & demographics
  • Eyewitness News at 10pm has significant increases book–to-book
  • Eyewitness News at 11pm is up year-to-year across all demos

While Eyewitness News at Noon on WPRI 12 was up year-to-year in all key demos, the show was #1 with A25-54. In addition, Eyewitness News saw tremendous gains across all of its early evening newscasts.

When it comes to early evening news growth, Eyewitness News saw the most by a landslide. Eyewitness News at 5pm on WPRI 12 continued its growth year-to-year, up 62% with A18-49 and up 40% with A25-54. Eyewitness News at 5:30pm on WPRI 12 was up 62% with A18-49 and up 23% A25-54. Eyewitness News at 6pm on WPRI 12 experienced significant growth in key demos, up 56% in A18-49 and up 40% with A25-54. Overall, Eyewitness News improved its early evening news growth from 5pm to 6:30pm in key demographics an average of 53% in A18-49 and 33% in A25-54.

In the late news race, Eyewitness News at 10 on Fox Providence had significant increases from the November 2013 ratings period and was consistent year-to-year. Eyewitness News at 11 on WPRI 12 was up book-to-book. The 11pm news was also up year-to-year with an increase of 64% in A18-49 and A25-54.

In other key programming, The Rhode Show on WPRI 12 continued to see terrific growth. Rhode Island’s only local, lifestyle, news and entertainment program was up substantially with viewers, up 43% in W35+ year-to-year and also averaging 49% increases across most major demographics.

For its digital multi-screen coverage, WPRI.com was #1 in total desktop uniques (within the local DMA) according to the most recent comScore measures. WPRI.com also saw growth on its mobile platform by 29% year-to-year.

EYEWITNESS NEWS NAMES SHANNON HEGY AS ANCHORShannon Hegy

Karen Rezendes, News Director of WPRI/WNAC, is pleased to announce that Shannon Hegy has been named co-anchor of Eyewitness News. Hegy will be co-anchoring Eyewitness News at 5pm, 6pm, and 11pm with Mike Montecalvo, Chief Meteorologist Tony Petrarca, and Sports Anchor Yianni Kourakis. Her promotion is effective immediately.

Hegy will also be co-anchoring Eyewitness News at 6:30pm on Fox Providence with Steve Nielsen, Chief Meteorologist Tony Petrarca, and Sports Anchor Yianni Kourakis and Eyewitness News at 10:00pm on Fox Providence with Mike Montecalvo, Chief Meteorologist Tony Petrarca, and Sports Anchor Yianni Kourakis.

Eyewitness News to Launch 6:30pm News on Fox Providence

Eyewitness News is expanding its commitment to local news viewers. Beginning Monday, January 27, 2014, Eyewitness News at 6:30pm will debut on Fox Providence and will be the market’s only local newscast in the time period Monday through Friday.

“We’re expanding our early evening news coverage to help fit the busy lifestyles of our viewers in Southern New England,” says Eyewitness News Director Karen Rezendes. “Our news team is committed to providing them more local news and weather content when they want it.”

Eyewitness News at 6:30pm on Fox Providence will be co-anchored by Shannon Hegy and Steve Nielsen. The half-hour newscast will provide viewers more coverage of the day’s top stories, breaking news coverage, and investigative coverage. Chief Meteorologist Tony Petrarca will keep viewers prepared with his live Pinpoint Doppler 12 Futurecast. Eyewitness Sports Director Yianni Kourakis will provide highlights and coverage of local sports, college sports, as well as Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins.

Eyewitness News Wins & Makes Significant Gains in November Ratings

and impressive growth in early evening

During the November 2013 ratings period, Eyewitness News on WPRI 12 and Fox Providence had significant wins and impressive growth on its broadcast and digital screens in the competitive Providence/New Bedford television market.

Highlights include:

  •   Eyewitness News This Morning was the #1 newscast weekdays at 5am
  •   Eyewitness News at Noon also achieved the #1 position in the market
  •   Eyewitness News at 10pm on Fox Providence was a virtual tie in late news
  •   Eyewitness News This Morning on Saturdays was the #1 newscast
  •   Eyewitness News from 5pm to 6:30pm grew viewership in all key demographics
  •   WPRI has dramatic growth in AM & early evening news while WJAR decreases in all newscasts

More specifically, Eyewitness News This Morning at 5am on WPRI 12 won in both key demos of Adults18-49 and Adults 25-54. Eyewitness News This Morning at 6am on WPRI 12 saw dramatic increases as well, up 155% with Adults 18-49 and up 115% with Adults 25-54. Overall, Eyewitness News improved its morning growth from 5am to 7am in key demographics an average of 160% and continues to close the gap on WJAR. WJAR’s morning news decreased 32% with Adults 25-54. Eyewitness News This Morning at 7am on Fox Providence increased 25% with Adults 25 -54, while Eyewitness This Morning at 8am on Fox Providence saw an increase of 100% with Adults 18-49 and 200% with Adults 25-54.

While Eyewitness News at Noon was once again #1 with Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54, the success for Eyewitness News also extends to the early evening. From 5pm to 6:30pm, Eyewitness News grew the key demo of Adults 25-54 by 22%. This growth was at its closest competitor’s expense. WJAR was down 15% in Adults 25-54. In the late news race, Eyewitness News at 10 on Fox Providence was in a virtual tie for #1 in late, local news.

According to comScore, WPRI.com was the top broadcast website in Rhode Island for unique visitors.

Eyewitness News to Air Severe Weather Week Starting August 19th

Eyewitness News is helping viewers prepare for the 2013 hurricane season with Severe Weather Week. Starting Monday August 19th, Eyewitness News will present special, in-depth stories focusing on severe weather and hurricanes. These exclusive reports will air every day and in every newscast on WPRI 12 and Fox Providence throughout the week. Eyewitness News will also have extended coverage on wpri.com that will serve as a lasting resource for viewers whenever severe weather strikes.

During Severe Weather Week, the Eyewitness News Pinpoint Weather team will look back at some of the more powerful storms to hit our area, give viewers an exclusive look at the technology they use to forecast the weather, and show you the progress some communities have made since Super Storm Sandy. In addition, Chief Meteorologist Tony Petrarca will deliver his exclusive 2013 Hurricane Futurecast so you’ll know just what to expect this season.

Call 12 For Action reporter Susan Hogan will show viewers how to prepare for any type of severe weather – with vital information about survival kits, food safety and power loss plans. The week will conclude with Chief Meteorologist Tony Petrarca, who will show viewers exactly what it’s like to be in a Category 3 Hurricane.

WPRI Media: July Sweeps Results

Eyewitness News Shows Growth in July Ratings

10pm News on Fox Providence is #1 late news

In the July 2013 Nielsen ratings period, Eyewitness News showed significant growth with its late night newscasts and was #1 in late news, beating all local newscasts in the key demographic of A18-49.  Eyewitness News also demonstrated terrific growth with its weekend morning news coverage, again winning in A18-49, with its early evening newscasts and showing sustained growth across its digital screens.

The late news growth experienced in the May 2013 ratings period continued during the July measurements with Eyewitness News at 10 on Fox Providence winning the late night news race outright. In July 2013, Eyewitness News at 10 on Fox Providence was up in all key demos- up 27% in A18-49 and up 10% in A25-54. Eyewitness News at 11pm on WPRI 12 was also up year to year 23% in A18-49, up 47% in A25-54 and up 32 % in W25 -54. The fact remains that more viewers are getting their late night news from Eyewitness News on Fox Providence at 10pm and WPRI 12 at 11pm.

The success for Eyewitness News also extends to its weekend morning news coverage.  On both Saturday and Sunday mornings, Eyewitness News was #1 among A18-49 and tied for #1 in A25-54. In particular, Eyewitness News This Morning, airing Sundays from 6am to 9am on WPRI 12, was up 50% in A18-49, up 44% in A25-54 and up a whopping 150% in W25-54.

In addition, Eyewitness News saw solid growth with its early evening newscasts. Eyewitness News Live at 5 and Eyewitness News at 5:30 each saw a 10% increase in A25-54 from last July.  Eyewitness News at 6 grew all key demos in its time period. The 6pm news increased by 31% in A18-49, 17% in A25-54, and 14% W25-54.

WPRI 12 and Fox Providence also excelled in prime time programming. The top 3 July primetime shows for A25-54 and A18-49 aired on WPRI 12 and Fox Providence.

WPRI’s growth also extends to its digital multi-screen coverage. WPRI.com delivered more desktop unique visitors in July 2013. WPRI.com saw a 16% growth in desktop unique visitors year to year, more than any other local TV website. WPRI.com is also the #1 mobile site in terms of unique visitors among all media mobile platforms in the market.
